Here are excerpts from 2 newspaper articles about races at the old Charlotte NC Southern States Fairgrounds racetrack. It was located near what is now North Tryon Street and Sugar Creek Road.

Moore Cops 2nd Feautre, Concord Aces Show Well

Charlotte - "Sure, now that I've got two in a row, I'll definetly go after that number three"

That's the way Bunk Moore of Indian Trial felt after he won Friday night's 30 lap modified stock car racing feature event here at the Southern States Fairgrounds.

Moore led all the way to make it two in succession. He won the 50 lap mid-season crown last week. Next week, he'll be shooting for a victory in the Regional Qualifyin Race, the only one held at the Fairground this year.

The Indian Trial ace drove a Cadillac powered Chevy to victory. He also set the fastest qualifying mark at 29.23 seconds.

Moore had to fight off a bid by Cotton Owens of Spartanburg, S.C. the last 10 laps to win first money.

Behind these two came Tommy Boger of Concord, Red Irvin of Concord, Dink Widenhouse of Concord, Ralph Earnhardt of Kannapolis, Ned Jarrett of Newton, Mutt Simpson of Concord, Johnny Miller of Kannapolis, and Bill Widenhouse of Midland.

Irvin copped the first heat with Moore second. Buddy Shuman of Charlotte third and Jimmy Thompson of Monroe fourth. Boger won the second heat, Bill Widenhouse was second, Owens third, and Dink Widenhouse fourth. Earnhardt won the consolation, and was followed home by George Mantooth of Concord, Miller, and Termite Moose.

A crowd of 3,100 saw the program.

Moore, Wild Bill Close Point Gap on Red Irvin

Charlotte - The modified stock car racing championship at the Southern States Fairgrounds is still up for grabs. And at least three heavy footed Tar Heel pilots haven't let up since the first of the season in trying to grab off the crown.

Still heading the pack, but by a narrow 18 point margin is Concord's Red Irvin with 696 points. He's trailed by Wild Bill Widenhouse of Midland who has 678 points to date, and Bunk Moore of Indian Trail who has earned 670.

Irvin has led the column most of the season, but Widenhouse and Moore have been steadily closing up from the rear. Widenhouse moved into second place last week in the 100 lap race, and by finishing nine positions ahead of Irvin this week could catch him.

Also NASCAR's national modified point leader, Widenhouse hopes to add the Fairgrounds title to his growing list of titles. With any kind of luck the rest of the year, he'll be the first Tar Heel ever to win the national modified crown.

Meanwhile, in the Fairgrounds sportmen column things have settled down to more of a routine nature as far as the No.1 spot is concerned, but there is still plenty of competition for some of the remaining berths.

Ralph Earnhardt of Kannapolis has a 120 point spread in the point column. Ned Jarrett of Newton trails him 652 to 772, but another Concord driver, Mutt Simpson has been making a serious bid for the No. 2 spot. he is now only 38 points back of Jarrett.
