Larry Wallace
I thought that you’d enjoy Larry Wallace’s meticulous records of his 1967 dirt track season…many driver’s tell a tale, but Larry actually wrote down his race results after every race just in case the IRS came calling… Click here to read the record of Larry's season.
It has to rank as one of the most meticulous records ever surviving from that era…I’ve transcribed the numbers from his written notes to make it more legible, but I do have a copy of his actual records…I call this “a year in the life of a dirt track driver“….
The car he drove was a 1966 black and gold Chevelle built by the late Don Duncan, the legendary builder from the Monroe area. Larry won the championship in 1967 with this black and gold Chevelle no. 61 and Dub Simpson came in second in a sister car number 22. The year before, 1966, saw Dub win the championship with the same car that Larry drove in 1967, winning some 18 feature races at Concord alone (source: see newspaper clipping from around April, 1967).
The attached newspaper article from that era does not account additional feature wins at such tracks as Starlite, Gaffney, and Carolina Speedways. Doing so would rank this car in the 50+ documented feature win category, probably the highest documented win total in existence.
As a result, Spraker Racing Enterprises of Mooresville has been engaged to make a tribute car to this Chevelle. The car should be finished in February and the wide 5’s all the way around should make for a very interesting car. Intentions are to use the car in conjunction with the “Make a Wish” foundation, Adam Petty’s tribute “Victory Junction Gang” foundation and various vintage gatherings at Darlington and other tracks.
